Subfamily

A division of a family, standing between the family and the tribe or genus in taxonomy. The scientific name of a subfamily ends in '-inae'. The wildfowl family (Anatidae) is divided into three subfamilies, of which two have representatives in the British Isles, namely the Anserinae (swans and geese) and the Anatinae (ducks).
