Sub-order
A division of an order, thus standing between the order and the family in taxonomy. The very large order Passeriformes, containing the passerine birds, is divided into four sub-orders, of which only one, the oscines, has representatives in the British Isles.From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
