Lumper
A scientist working in the field of taxonomy who tends to emphasise the similarities between species and group them together in the same genus wherever possible. The opposite kind of taxonomist is a 'splitter', who tends to emphasise the differences between species and to increase the number of genera. In modern taxonomy lumpers seem to outnumber splitters and many formerly separate genera are no longer accepted as such. From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
