Ground Feeders

Birds

Species which habitually feed on the ground. Most such birds are also quite happy to visit seed trays and bird tables well above ground level, and some (Starlings, for example)can even tackle hanging feeders. Apart from Starlings, the most obvious ground feeders are thrushes, including Blackbirds, robins, dunnocks, sparrows, finches, doves and pigeons, crows and gulls. Most other birds, however, will feed on the ground at least on occasion.

Equipment

Specially designed to cater for ground-feeding birds, a range of devices is available to supply food at ground level. The simplest is a tray, raised off the ground on short legs, and preferably having a stainless steel bottom with drainage holes. Another wooden type has a built- in hopper to provide a continuous supply of food. The best ground feeder is the model G-1 made of woodcrete by the German firm Schwegler GmbH, a rot- resistant device also built on the hopper principle. These feeders can be filled with a seed mixture, with added dried fruit, such as raisins and currants.
