Standard deviation
A statistical measure of the degree of variation ('spread') of a set of quantitative data around its mean. It is important to know the standard deviation if the mean is to be of any real use, while the mean itself is subject to a standard error.From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
