Ground colour
The basic tint of an eggshell, masked to a varying degree by any markings present. For example, in the eggs of the Blackbird Turdus merula the ground colour is light blue but is more or less heavily obscured by reddish-brown spots and blotches.From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
