Rendered extinct in 1917 Scotland (?1898 Ireland and 1794 England). Successful reintroduction of Norwegian birds started on Rum by NCC (now run by SNH & RSPB) in 1975 and first chick reared in 1985. Progress currently very slow but sure, but some have been illegally killed. It is planned that more birds will be released regularly for a truly viable population to be established.
