Serin (European Serin)

Serinus serinus

UK ConservationBlank Face

This tiny finch became more regularly recorded 40 years ago, following expansion in Europe, and first bred in Dorset in 1967 and again in Sussex in 1969. Welcome for a new regular breeding species was premature although up to nine may have bred in any one year — particularly in

Devon during the 1980s. Quite a few were in East Anglia and the only reported record in 1996 and 1997 was a male caught in Norfolk on 15th May. Breeding started on Jersey in 1972 and there may be 20 or more pairs now. May yet become established on the mainland.
