Seed

The most basic of all foods for birds, seed is not only taken by specialised seed eaters such as sparrows and finches, but some types are also of interest to insectivorous birds like Dunnocks and Blackcaps. As seeds are nutrient stores, they can be rich sources of energy for birds, and a wide variety is available from specialised dealers in bird-care products, either as pure seed of one type or in seed mixtures. The most important seeds for feeding birds are peanuts, sunflower seed, niger seed, and grains such as oats and wheat. For offering seed to birds, various devices are available, including seed trays and feeders. It is important to ensure that the seed being fed is of good quality, as much of what is sold through local outlets can be poor in nutritional value or even completely unsuitable.
