Fruit

Some birds include fruit, mainly in the form of berries, as part of their regular natural diet in autumn and early winter, notably Blackbirds and other thrushes. For such species offering fruit from about Christmas onwards, when these natural supplies are more or less finished, is a valuable contribution to their survival over the remainder of the winter, especially when the ground is frozen or covered with snow. Apples and pears are much appreciated, even if they are in poor condition, and they are best scattered on the ground. Fruits like grapes and currants, though not citrus fruits, are readily accepted, but dried fruit should be soaked overnight before being put out.
