First proved breeding Anglesey 1904, Ireland 1915, England 1918 and Scotland 1930. Astonishingly a colony of 250 to 300 pairs was found in Co. Roscommon in 1929 but the lake was drained in 1934, and they have only been sporadic breeders in Ireland during the last 40 years.

Up to 80 scattered pairs England and Scotland — mostly north of a line from Beachy Head to the Mersey — and possibly Anglesey in recent years. Safer now they are dispersed?
