National Audubon Society

The oldest and largest organisation concerned with conservation in the USA. It was founded in 1905 and named after the ornithologist and artist John James LaForest Audubon (1785-1851). Its main purpose is to increase public understanding of the need for conservation of wildlife, and it maintains and wardens many sanctuaries throughout the country. It is financed entirely from private sources, and it receives no government funding. Anyone is entitled to join the society, which has branches in every state and also in Canada. It can be contacted at 950 Third Avenue, New York 10022.
