Attracting Birds
Success in attracting birds to a garden is based on meeting their needs, which can be summed up as follows:
- Food and water
- Nesting places
- Roosting places
- Protection from predators
- Shelter from inclement weather
The importance of each of these requirements will vary from one species to another, and other factors will also play their parts, such as the season of the year and the type of area surrounding the garden. In this encyclopedia the most useful headings to start with might be attracting particular birds, feeding birds, foods for birds, gardening for birds, nest boxes and siting of feeding stations. These entries refer to more detailed ones such as choosing equipment, hygiene and summer feeding.
