Winnowing
Rapid wing beating through a very shallow arc in swift flight. It is characteristic of some falcons (family Falconidae), notably the Hobby Falco subbuteo and the Peregrine F. peregrinus, which alternate winnowing with gliding on outstretched wings.From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
