Tundra
The area of open treeless country which encircles the Arctic Ocean, lying to the north of the belt of boreal forest. The vegetation consists mainly of mosses and lichens and much of the ground is boggy when it thaws in summer, It is an important breeding ground for many of the wildfowl and wader flocks which visit the British Isles outside the breeding season. From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
