Sahel Zone
The belt of grassland with trees ('savanna') and thorny scrub which lies immediately south of the Sahara. Several species of summer visitor to the British Isles winter in the Sahel, which is subject to drought. The population crash of the Whitethroat Sylvia communis in 1969 may have been caused by such a drought. From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
