Peterson Field Guide system

The use of a pointer on a bird illustration to indicate a field character which is useful in identification. The device was used for a field guide in 1934 by the American ornithologist and artist Roger Tory Peterson and introduced into Britain in A Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe, published in 1954.
