Parabolic reflector
An item of sound recording equipment in the shape of a bowl with a reversed microphone in the centre, much used in recording birds because it focuses sounds from the direction in which it is pointed and reduces extraneous noise like unwanted bird calls and the hum of traffic. A parabolic reflector microphone is connected to a tape recorder. From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
