Ecotone
The transition zone betweeen two types of habitat. For example, woodland edge is an ecotone standing between open country and forest habitats. Ecotones are usually richer in their variety of birds than the adjoining habitats as they contain a mixture of species from each habitat. This tendency is called 'edge effect'.From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
