Brooding
The warming of the eggs or young by the parent bird sitting over them. It is necessary because of the small size of the young, which causes them to lose heat relatively quickly, and, in nidicolous nestlings, because of their lack of thermoregulation.From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
