Machair

Grass-covered shell sand on the leeward side of dunes along the mainland coast and (especially) on the Hebridean islands of north-west Scotland. Typical breeding birds of the machair include the Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula and the Skylark Alauda arvensis.
