Flash
A small lake or marsh caused by flooding, with particular reference to those resulting from mining subsidence. The term is used on the Cheshire saltfield and on the Lancashire and Derbyshire coalfields, but in Yorkshire it is replaced by the word 'ing'. Flashes may have considerable ornithological interest, and Fairburn Ings in West Yorkshire is an important nature reserve.From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
