Botulism
A bacterial disease causing acute food poisoning, occurring particularly in stagnant water and so especially affecting wildfowl, hence the name 'duck sickness'. Serious outbreaks can cause very high mortality among birds.From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
