Bird sanctuary
An officially designated and defined area in which all birds, their nests and their eggs and young are fully protected. The Secretary of State for the Environment has the power to establish such sanctuaries by applying 'santuary orders' under the bird protection laws. Unofficially, any place where some measure of protection is given to birds may be called a bird sanctuary. From Peter Weaver's Birdwatcher's Dictionary
